Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Counters Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Matches from Boston

The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, suggested that the city was ready for a dispute with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.

Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can change it.

She continued, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."

She further stated, "We will keep being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." She concluded by stressing her support for the Boston, saying, "Ten toes down for our city."

Trump's Statements and FIFA's Involvement

Recently, Infantino was photographed with President Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to the president as presents.

Earlier, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in South Boston that included a police vehicle being burned. Trump replied, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the head of the organization, who's great."

He added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about moving matches from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from 11 June to July 19 next summer.
